I really liked the kids I was given: I have a very diverse group. It seems a bit odd that there are three second graders and then four fifth graders, among others, but they seem to get along okay. I let them share some information about themselves after I shared my four slides, and they were pretty excited about that. I was glad to see the little paper I wrote up wasn't boring for them. Then I explained Genius Hour for them, and asked what they think would be cool to research/learn about. There was a boy who said he had just started playing guitar, but he seemed kind of disinterested in actually doing a project on it at first. I told him he didn't have to be very good at playing yet, there were tons of things he could look at: How different frets and strings produce different sounds, how an electric guitar works (how the amp works), the history of guitars, etc. He seemed much more interested after that, and a couple other kids even sounded like they'd like to work on that. Overall, the kids seemed to be pretty excited to start and, aside from one boy, they were all well-behaved. I'll work with him to fix that, just have to find the line between stern and mean.
